Laboratory Notebook
Research lab notebooks are pocket books for documenting scientific experiments as well as recording any conclusions after a series of experiments. Based on the stored information about the preparation and execution of an experiment any researcher with an adequate knowledge of the domain should be able to reproduce the results of an experiment.
The goal of our interactive research lab notebook is not to replace the classical paper laboratory notebook but to augment it with a digital system. This has the advantage that scientists can write their reports as usual in the paper notebooks, but the data is also available in digital from on a computer system. Based on interviews with researchers working in different research labs at ETH Zurich, we defined a set of requirements for digitally augmented research notebooks. Our interactive research laboratory prototype consists of a paper notebook, a special software components and a web interface for accessing information in digital format.
