Area of Interest

Moira's research and teaching focusses on the use of object-oriented and web technologies for next generation information systems. Her research group Global Information Systems (GlobIS) has developed the OMS database development suite designed to support the development of object-oriented databases from conceptual design through to implementation. They are also one of the leading research groups on technologies for interactive paper and have developed a general framework iServer/iPaper for the rapid prototyping and production of interactive documents and paper-based applications. Using this framework, they have developed several applications, including the presentation tool PaperPoint. They have also recently released iGesture a general framework for gesture recognition under an open source licence.

Background

Moira studied Mathematics and Computer Science in her home country of Scotland. She obtained a B.Sc. from the University of Dundee, an M.Sc. from Heriot-Watt university in Edinburgh and a Ph.D. from the University of Glasgow. Her previous posts include lectureships at the Universities of Edinburgh, Hertfordshire and Abertay and research positions at the Swedish Institute for Systems Development (SISU) in Stockholm and the University of Glasgow. She joined the Institute for Information Systems at ETH Zurich in 1993 and established the Global Information Systems group in February 1996.
