Michael's work is situated in the domain of information systems and his research focuses on developing innovative database technologies. Currently, he is investigating how to best address the requirements of emerging applications by extending object-oriented database systems with novel concepts. In response to context-aware applications, Michael has defined an object-oriented version model that supports context-dependent data management and query processing. To support the needs of today's web engineering where the need for context-awareness is particularly predominant, Michael has implemented a content management system that can be used as an platform for model-based approaches. This Extensible Content Management (XCM) system is built around the separation of content, structure, layout and view. Metadata about all four concepts is managed context-dependently leading to a very flexible and powerful system. At the moment XCM consists of a server component and a client graphical user interface. In 2005, XCM successfully served as the server back-end of EdFest mobile tourist information system at the annual Edinburgh festivals.

Background

Michael was born in Basel, Switzerland where he went to school and graduated in modern languages at Leonard Grammar School in 1995. After working one year for Novartis in Basel, Michael decided to study computer science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. During his studies at ETH Zurich he was a member of the board of the Computer Science Students Association from 1998 to 2001. In this function, Michael contributed to several committees within the Department of Computer Science. Michael also gained teaching experience as a regular teaching assistant for various lectures. As a focus area of his studies he chose information systems and ultimately did his diploma thesis (M.Sc.) in computer science at the Global Information Systems Group in 2001. In 2007, Michael completed his PhD entitled "An Object-Oriented Version Model for Context-Aware Data Management" at ETH Zurich. After his PhD, he continued working as a senior researcher in the Institute for Information Systems at ETH Zurich.

In 2008, Michael was awarded a post-doctoral fellowship from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), entitled A Platform for the Development and Implementation of Web 2.0 Applications and hosted by Prof. Stefano Ceri's database group at the Politecnico di Milano. At Politecnico di Milano, Michael also had the opportunity to contribute to ongoing projects, in particular C-SPARQL, a continuous query language and processor for RDF data streams and Search Computing (SeCo), a new multi-disciplinary science which will provide the abstractions, foundations, methods, and tools required to answer multi-domain queries over Web data sources.

Currently, Michael is a SNSF-funded post-doc in Prof. David Maier's group at Portland State University, where he works on the project entitled Exploiting Object Database Technologies for Data Management in the Cloud. His current Web site can be found here.

Context-Aware Data Management - An Object-Oriented Version Model by Michael Grossniklaus

Book Description
Context-awareness is a requirement of many modern applications. While several solutions exist to gather, represent and process context, very few provide management of context-aware data. In this book, a two-dimensional version model is presented, that allows managing context-dependent variants, while, at the same time, keeping track of the revision history. Queries are processed based on a matching algorithm that uses the current context of the system to select the best object. The book is targeted at developers and researchers in mobile, ubiquitous and pervasive computing as well as in web engineering.
