Dr. Alexandre de Spindler

Alexandre is interested in the design and implementation of architectures, frameworks and platforms, in distributed and collaborative information environments as well as mobile and personal information systems.

Background

Alexandre studied computer science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. During his studies he focused on software engineering, computational statistics, information systems and neuroinformatics as a minor subject. He joined the Global Information Systems Group in August 2005.

Developments in mobile phone technologies have opened the way for new mobile applications that allow users to interact and share information, along with a growing developer community supported by vendor toolkits. However, current programming platforms for mobile phones provide limited support for information management and sharing, requiring developers to deal with low-level issues such as data persistence, data exchange and vicinity sensing.

Alexandre is looking for high-level abstractions and models that support the development of mobile applications. He is analysing the requirements of mobile applications and designing an application framework simplifying application development. The framework is based on a simple and flexible object model including a meta object protocol. It provides high-level abstractions for information persistence, location-awareness, opportunistic information sharing and vicinity sensing while fostering the orthogonal separation of concerns. Developers benefit from these features and design principles as they simplify the development of advanced applications.

In general, Alexandre is interested in any form of self-organising and decentralised social activities resulting in a collaboration aiming at supporting the participants.
