Adriana's research focuses on interactive paper. In particular, she is interested in how this technology might be used to support natural notetaking. She successfully defended her PhD thesis "Beyond the Digital Capture of Paper Notes: Investigations of Enhanced Natural Notetaking based on Digital Pen and Paper Technology" in December 2011 and continued her work in the GlobIS group as a Post Doctoral researcher in 2012.

A short media coverage on the technology, as well the some of the work we did can be found in SF's reportage "Der digitale Kugelschreiber" : link.

General research interests: Interactive Paper, Computer Supported Collaborative Work, Human Computer Interaction, Personal Information Management, Ubiquitous and Tangible Computing, Multimodal Interaction.

Background

Adriana is originally from Cluj-Napoca, a town in the heart of Transilvania, Romania. She received the degree of Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and Engineering from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca and the degree of Master of Science in Computer Science from the Babes-Bolyai University of Cluj-Napoca.
Adriana developed her diploma thesis “Consistency Maintenance over XML Documents in Asynchronous Collaborative Editing” within the Global Information Systems Group, ETH Zurich, as a visiting student. She joined the Global Information Systems Group in October 2006 as an Academic Guest and started her PhD in 2007.

Projects

Study of Natural Notetaking
Framework for Digital Ink Segmentation and Classification
  • Framework for the development of digital pen and paper-based notetaking solutions which supports a combination of user-driven and automatic processing approaches
  • Published in Ispas et al., EICS2011

Ambient Display of Handwritten Notes
  • System that displays reminder notes as ambient information on a secondary screen in the user's environment
  • Published in Ispas et al., OzCHI2012

Meeting Support and Review System (In-meeting, Pre-meeting, Post-meeting)
  • Meeting support system which allows the integration of personal notes with media used for shared work supported
    by a digital tabletop surface
  • The system includes a post-meeting review component which allows meeting participants to consult both paper and digital material integrated according to their use during the preceding meeting
  • A pre-meeting component allows participants to collect and upload both paper and digital material to a virtual document space. The material uploaded will be accessible for interactions in the shared interaction space during meetings
  • Published in Ispas et al., CollaborateCom 2010
