Assignment of papers

A compilation of papers to be presented during this year’s seminar is available here.

Please select four papers, marking them with 1, 2, 3 or 4, according to your preference (mark with 1 the paper you prefer the most) and send an e-mail to Adriana Ispas no later than 25.02.2010, 11:59 am. We will also use this information when assigning buddies for the other students’s presentations.

You will be informed about the final assignment of papers on 26.02.2010. The schedule of the presentations and the assignment of supervising assistants and buddies will be made available on the seminar web page the same day.

Details about the presentations

Recommended structure

Presentations should be 30 minutes long and should be organised as follows:

• Problem statement (10 minutes) – In this section, you are supposed to clearly state what the addressed problem is, placing it into context by making references to related work.
• Proposed approach (15 minutes) – In this part, you are supposed to present the solution proposed by the authors, emphasising the innovation.
• Review (5 minutes) – In this final part, you are supposed to present your own assessment of the approach, clearly stating 2 positive and 2 negative points about any aspect of the paper e.g. relevance, originality, quality and presentation.

Buddies

Buddies are supposed to comment on their colleague’s review of the paper at the end of the presentation, clearly stating their reasons for agreeing or disagreeing. Also, at least one pertinent question should be asked. To do so, the buddies should also study the paper in depth.

Report

Presentations are to be accompanied by a 2 page report. The report has to follow the recommended structure of the presentation.

Supervision

A draft of both your presentation and your report has to be provided to your assigned supervisor no later than 1 week before the presentation. You should also arrange a meeting with your supervisor to take place in the week before the presentation in order that you can get feedback on both the draft presentation and the draft report.

The final report has to be submitted no later than 1 week after the presentation.

Note that it is your responsibility to arrange the meeting with your supervisor.
